The taste is pretty good, at least for me who had never had chana masala. I had 1 pouch per each dinner, and it was definitely more than enough (170 lb man). For the price, I did leave the pouch to cook a bit longer than 15 minutes on the second attempt since the first attempt had me eating a few crunchy beans with just 15 minutes of 'cook time'.Overall, I would buy it again if I just wanted some simple and easy to cook food to bring onto a camping/backpacking trip next time.
I was happily incredibly surprised by this Chana Masala. Not only was it delicious and but I felt like the portions were huge. All you do is add hot water and let it sit. I spilt with between four friends and we were left stuffed. My only comment was the on the adding two cups of hot water some of the meal readys have lines dedicated to this but luckily we had a way to figure out the hot water portion. Either way definitely worth it and the price was even better.
This was a truly unique dish. After a long cold hike and setting up my hammock in the rain under my tarp I was able to stay dry and cook this meal. After about 8 hours of hiking and only having trail snacks through the day this really hit the spot.
As far as dehydrated meals go, I like the Backpacker's Pantry because they tend to pack a little slimmer than some cheaper ones. This particular menu selection was the best one I've had, though none are what I would consider "gourmet quality". They'll do nicely for a backpacking trip.
I tried the Chana Masala. It is vegetarian and the spices make the dish very tasty. On the downside, I found that about a third of the chick peas were edible but still hard. I would recommend that you mix the dish halfway through the recommended soak/wait time to even things out.
A delicious, spicy Indian-inspired meal. If you like spicy, you will be pleased. While not as hot as some Indian food, it is enough to satisfy spicy-lovers and has very good flavor. If you don't like spicy, don't buy this! It has crushed red pepper (the pizza peppers) and cayenne. The heat is not as hot as habanero but hotter than jalapeno and hotter than their "spicy" pad thai. Another bonus: it is vegetarian. Normally channa masala is just the garbanzo beans (you would order rice separately) but this comes with rice - and a lot of it. My only complaint is that there is more rice than beans, making this a super high-carb meal. But it is tasty, easy and satisfying, especially if eaten with something else, like a protein bar, so it still gets 5 stars.
I bought this to try since it was an add on purchase and good vegetarian options are sometimes harder to find. I was surprised at how good it tasted! Super easy to prepare, just added the exact amount of boiling water from directions, stir well, re-seal, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Stirred again before serving. Rehydrated perfectly, no crunchy rice or garbanzo beans. Made more food than we thought, definitely filled us up with the 2 serving size. It was a little on the salty side but not enough to make me not want to eat it again. It's just spicy enough to be tasty without it being overpowering. I will buy this again and am adding it to the rotation of backpacking meals.
